Well it seems that the battle with the watchdogs is not only on the ESPs and clients but also on the ISPs themselves now days. Interesting take on this and wondering how Microsoft and Verizon are going to handle this. Will they shrug it off? Or will they take it seriously as all of us do?
Microsoft is listed fifth in the Top 10 list of the worst spam service ISPs compiled by Spamhaus.org.
Spammers are advertising links to sites that “peddle fake pharmacy products, porn, and Nigerian 419 scams” on Microsoft’s Live.com and Livefilestore.com sites because they know that the Microsoft sites won’t get blocked by antispam groups, writes Brian Krebs on his Security Fix Blog at the Washington Post.
Spamhaus has been alerting Microsoft to the problem for some time, but to no avail, Richard Cox, Spamhaus’ chief information officer, told Krebs. Other security companies, including McAfee and Marshal, have also been warning about increases in spam and scams on Microsoft-hosted sites.

The big ISPs send very high volumes of mail on behalf of random end users — some of whom are spammers. So, they’ll always show up at the top of volume-based spam lists.
But the big ISPs are also putting immense effort into stopping outbound spam. They aren’t trying to make excuses about being CAN-SPAM compliant, and they don’t bitch about the rules being unfair. Compare that to the email marketing industry….

I know we all complain. But in ANY industry we all complain about something. Find me one that every side loves one another, and I will go work there.
Side note of more relevance: I have been in marketing meetings at BIG ISPs yahow and mikroseeft and I can tell you that their marketing teams who have MILLIONS of email addresses are in essence spamming and blasting thier members, using minimal to no segmentation and selling remnant space to ad brands. Tomato tomaato.

Interesting comment. How would Microsoft and Yahoo! be ’spamming’ in any way their own users? By marketing to people who use a free service and AGREE, in advance, to receive email as part of the deal? Now, contrast that to some marketers who feel an email address in hand gives them free reign to mail it until it explodes, then pass it off to a valued ‘3rd party’.

By the way with regard to that other foot – the ISP list by SPAMHAUS is a very old one. This isn’t news, rather SPAMHAUS’ herculian efforts to get the live.com space under control, in collaboration with MS.
