An Email Vacation – Not a Vacation From Email
Aug 01 2008
For those of you that know me, you know that I have a hard time with vacations. I really like the whole concept of leaving work for a few days or a week, but I have a hard time not being connected. It is a wild thing in this day and age that we are always connected and always reading email to stay in the loop. Some are better at unplugging than others. Not me.
But I have actually not really “worked” as work is something you do when you don’t like what you do. I happen to be one of those sick individuals that loves to take some time off, relax, hang with friends and family in a warm locale, but I also love the industry and the agency/esp we have created at eROI. It is one of those places where I am excited each day to wake up and go to work. Crazy huh? But not so crazy that I need to be locked up in a white coat. Well some might tell you that at times. But I thrive on the innovation, creativity and family that eROI brings to the table. If you have not worked with us you should, but only if you like to do great work and have a blast while doing it.
I had to end with a tribute to a friend of mine who lives the opposite of me. He spent 10 years in software sales and his job was just an end to a means. That mean was him walking into work last January and telling his boss he was done. His boss asked, so where are you going to work? He said, maybe you don’t understand… I am done. No other job lined up just going to go live for a little while. And he did. Spent 4 months on the mountain skiing, then back to Portland taking trips across the US, and now enjoying the summer (as you can see in this photo above). He tells me maybe this fall he will get back into work. But when he is ready and done enjoying life. Ah if i could only decide to follow that path. But not in my blood. And yes, this is a real photo that he sent me one afternoon as I was at eROI. He might kill me for sharing it, but heck he sure does look like he is enjoying his time off. I should too. Surfing with the kids today and going to enjoy some beach time, and I will check my email and Twitter during the day from time to time as well.
Thanks for allowing me some slack this week. Looking forward to sharing more with you all as the year progresses.

Dylan –
I could not agree more with your comments. I am on vacation (in Portland, OR aka PDX of all places) and still “working.” A co-worker just IM’d me and said, “Why are you working?” I replied…”work/play tends to blur when you love what you do.”

But I hear if you live in PDX and wear that Mexican Wresting mask you can actually stop working… Dare to dream.
Glad you are enjoying all the Stumptown, aka PDX aka Portland has to offer. Sorry I am not in town to show you around.
